A quick sloppy joe mix with a kick.

  • 1 t canola oil
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (4 oz) green chiles
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 cup pureed canned tomatoes
  • 3/4 cup barbecue sauce
  • 1/3 cup ketchup
  • 1 T mustard
  • 2 T brown sugar
  • 1/2 t powdered cayenne pepper (or more if desired)
  • Yellowbird Serrano Condiment or other tangy hot sauce to taste (optional)
  • Toasted hamburger buns
  1. Heat the oil over medium-high heat in a large skillet. Add the onion, saute until translucent. Add garlic and green chiles and stir to combine.
  2. Increase the heat to high, then add the ground beef. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Stir occasionally until the beef is cooked through.
  3. Lower the heat to medium-low and add the tomato puree, barbecue sauce, ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, and cayenne. Add hot sauce if using. Stir to combine and simmer until thickened (10 minutes or more).
  4. Spread hamburger buns with mayonnaise if desired. Scoop beef mixture onto buns and serve.
