- 1 t canola oil
- 1 medium onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (4 oz) green chiles
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 cup pureed canned tomatoes
- 3/4 cup barbecue sauce
- 1/3 cup ketchup
- 1 T mustard
- 2 T brown sugar
- 1/2 t powdered cayenne pepper (or more if desired)
- Yellowbird Serrano Condiment or other tangy hot sauce to taste (optional)
- Toasted hamburger buns
- Heat the oil over medium-high heat in a large skillet. Add the onion, saute until translucent. Add garlic and green chiles and stir to combine.
- Increase the heat to high, then add the ground beef. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Stir occasionally until the beef is cooked through.
- Lower the heat to medium-low and add the tomato puree, barbecue sauce, ketchup, mustard, brown sugar, and cayenne. Add hot sauce if using. Stir to combine and simmer until thickened (10 minutes or more).
- Spread hamburger buns with mayonnaise if desired. Scoop beef mixture onto buns and serve.
